Happy belated ... sounds like good times.

Also: "The company I work for doesn't allow people to work on their birthdays" - everyone should be as lucky. :)

I am delighted you weathered your 40th birthday successfully. T.M.!

And I would add this thought to the book organization thinking: there is a reason libraries are organized according to subject matter. It's all about being able to find what you want when you want it.

Happy Birthday!

I'm not one to comment often, if at all. I like to read and go about my day. But here's my two cents on my method of book organization.

Type of book. I've got books from my recent year of massage therapy training together. Old Classics together. Strange spirituality and philosophy books together. Mostly.

I've also got tons of fiction thrown about in between all of these catagories because I just got too tired of moving everything when something new went on the shelf.

It's enough for me to just look at my books, smile and perhaps see something I haven't seen in a few years. Remember the good times. Maybe I like surprise nostalgia.

Thanks for the birthday wishes...

I have to say that as much as I like the chronological idea, I just don't see it working. I'm really not that bright.

I'd never be able to find anything and I'd be constantly thinking things like "Did Beckett publish 'Worstword Ho' before Bradbury's 'Martian Chronicles'?"

And that's really the sort of thing you'd have to extend to all books, which utterly befuddles me for the Mythology shelves (organized by topic) and the comics (title, then chronology). I'd go mad -- or, well, mad-er.

Anyone else got a favorite method?

happy birthday! great post. saw your tweet about shelving per author and it reminded me of an interview with susan sontag where she revealed that her books were organized chronologically -- like a "river of history".

I tried it for awhile and really liked it -- my shelves have devolved into chaos because of recent floor work and I'm back to rough thematic chunking, but when there's time I hope to restore the historical flow.

it changes everything.
