One Fanboy’s Story

There’s a new Batman cartoon starting this fall and I’m very geeked about it. I’ve been thinking about Batman a lot lately, what with the release of the first season of the Animated Series on DVD (the only Batman worth watching, in my opinion) and the new series and the new action figures for the new series.

The new Batman is very cool. He’s sleek and his eyes are narrow and his ears are short, like Vincent. Or Jesse Jackson.

I’ve been looking for the new Batman action figure for a while now. I’ve seen some of the other ones (In-Line Armor Skate Batman just doesn’t quite cut it for me, I’m a purist) but what I really wanted was the normal one. Just the costume, nothing fancy.

I’ve been hitting the various toy stores and grocery stores for a few weeks now. Even Keeley got into the act. She was there when I saw the first one (Underwater Parachute Batman or whatever it was ) and I think she was inspired by my sudden regression to being nine years old.

Last night, we got together for dinner and she said “Let’s go to get burgers and then I think we should go check Toys R Us to see if they have your Batman guy.”

“Nah. I have a theory that if I stop looking for something like that, that it’ll suddenly appear when I least expect it. If I just take a step back, it’ll pop up right in front of me.”

Years of looking for action figures has taught me this method.

When it doesn’t work, there’s always eBay.

“Oh, I’ve heard that before. I know how retail works and plenty of people say “I’ll wait until it goes on sale” or “Maybe it’ll come in the next shipment” and it never does and those are some sad, sad people.”

So we went to dinner. I had a burger. She had a Cobb salad.

I did not think about Batman at all during the meal.

Afterwards, we zipped over to Toys R Us.

They. Had. Batman.

Only. One. Left.

The. One. I. Was. Looking. For.

Kick. Ass.

Keeley was remarkably humble for a woman who is, apparently, always right.

I bought my toy and we went and watched the Democratic Convention. I sat and drew pictures for my new book for Sam’s birthday (ten years old!) and played with my Batman.

Doublestuff kickass.

New Batman cartoon this fall. I may have to get cable so I can watch it.
